Is it possible to control whether or not in-active products are displayed in the "Product Search" listing?
Yes, there is a token that can be used in the "Product Search page template" template, between the %beginform% and %endform% tokens, that will give the user the option to include/exclude inactive products from the listing (by default only active products are listed). This option, a checkbox, can be displayed with the token:
%include_inactive% (an example use might be "Include inactive products? %include_inactive%")
This checkbox has the name InActive and to have it include inactive products set it to 1. So you could add this feature to have it "always on" by adding a hidden form field to set the variable:
